- Treatment of traveler's diarrhea caused by non-invasive strains of Escherichia coli
- Reduction in the risk of overt hepatic encephalopathy recurrence
- Treatment of irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea
- Treatment of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth syndrome
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to rifaximin, rifamycin derivatives, or any of the excipients
- Intestinal obstruction
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Common: Nausea, headache, dizziness, Uncommon: Abdominal pain, flatulence, vomiting, Rare: Hypersensitivity reactions, including rash and pruritus
Dosing and Administration:
For the treatment of traveler's diarrhea, the recommended dose is 200 mg taken orally three times a day for 3 days. For hepatic encephalopathy, the recommended dose is 550 mg taken orally twice a day. For irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea, the recommended dose is 550 mg taken orally three times a day for 14 days. The dosage may vary based on the specific condition and patient response.
