Captopril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor that lowers blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels, making it easier for the heart to pump blood.Indications:
- Hypertension
- Heart failure
- Left ventricular dysfunction after myocardial infarction
- Diabetic nephropathy in patients with type 1 diabetes
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to captopril or other ACE inhibitors
- History of angioedema related to previous ACE inhibitor treatment
- Hereditary or idiopathic angioedema
- Pregnancy and lactation
- Severe renal impairment
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Cough, Dizziness, Rash, Taste disturbances, Hypotension, Hyperkalemia, Renal impairment, Angioedema
Dosing and Administration:
The initial dose for hypertension is 25 mg two or three times a day. The dose may be adjusted according to the patient's response, with a usual maintenance dose of 50 mg two or three times a day. For heart failure, the initial dose is 6.25 mg or 12.5 mg two or three times a day, with a maintenance dose of 25 mg two or three times a day. Dosage should be adjusted based on clinical response and tolerance.
