Carvedilol

Carvedilol is a non-selective beta-blocker with alpha-blocking activity. It reduces cardiac output, decreases peripheral vascular resistance, and lowers blood pressure. It also has antioxidant properties.Indications:
- Hypertension
- Chronic heart failure
- Left ventricular dysfunction following myocardial infarction
Contraindications:
- Severe chronic heart failure requiring intravenous inotropic therapy
- Asthma or other bronchospastic conditions
- Second or third-degree AV block
- Severe bradycardia
- Severe hepatic impairment
- Hypersensitivity to carvedilol or any of the excipients
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Dizziness, Fatigue, Hypotension, Diarrhea, Bradycardia, Weight gain, Hyperglycemia, Visual disturbances
Dosing and Administration:
The recommended starting dose for hypertension is 6.25 mg twice daily, which may be increased after 7-14 days to 12.5 mg twice daily. For chronic heart failure, the starting dose is 3.125 mg twice daily, which may be doubled every two weeks to the highest dose tolerated by the patient. It should be taken with food to reduce the risk of orthostatic hypotension.
