Diltiazem is a calcium channel blocker that works by relaxing the muscles of the heart and blood vessels. It is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and angina (chest pain).Indications:
- Hypertension
- Chronic stable angina
- Variant angina (Prinzmetal's angina)
Contraindications:
- Severe hypotension
- Second- or third-degree AV block (except in patients with a functioning artificial pacemaker)
- Sick sinus syndrome (except in patients with a functioning artificial pacemaker)
- Acute myocardial infarction and pulmonary congestion
- Hypersensitivity to diltiazem or any of the excipients
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Common: Edema, headache, dizziness, asthenia, Uncommon: Bradycardia, AV block, hypotension, Rare: Hepatic enzyme increase, skin rash, gastrointestinal disturbances
Dosing and Administration:
The usual starting dose is 30 mg to 60 mg taken orally three to four times daily before meals and at bedtime. Dosage may be adjusted according to patient response, up to a maximum of 360 mg per day.
