Azithromycin

Azithromycin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, that is used to treat different infections, including:

• infections of the upper respiratory tract and ENT organs: pharyngitis, tonsillitis, sinusitis, otitis media;
• lower respiratory tract infections: acute bronchitis, exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, incl. caused by atypical pathogens;
• skin and soft tissue infections: acne vulgaris of moderate severity, erysipelas, impetigo, secondarily infected dermatoses; the initial stage of Lyme disease (borreliosis) - migratory erythema;
• urinary tract infections caused by Chlamydia trachomatis (urethritis, cervicitis).

In combination with ceftriaxone, azithromycin is part of the United States Centers for Disease Control-recommended regimen for the treatment of gonorrhea. Azithromycin is active as monotherapy in most cases, but the combination with ceftriaxone is recommended based on the relatively low barrier to resistance development in gonococci.
