Pharmachologic effect:

Sumamed is a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, thereby preventing the growth and multiplication of bacteria.

Indications:


  • Respiratory tract infections
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Ear infections (otitis media)
  • Sexually transmitted infections
  • Gastrointestinal infections caused by Helicobacter pylori

Contraindications:


  • Hypersensitivity to azithromycin, erythromycin, or any macrolide antibiotics
  • Severe hepatic impairment
  • History of cholestatic jaundice or hepatic dysfunction associated with prior use of azithromycin

Side effects:


In order of decreasing probability: Common: Nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, Uncommon: Vomiting, flatulence, indigestion, Rare: Allergic reactions, including rash and pruritus, Very rare: Anaphylactic reactions, angioedema

Dosing and Administration:


The recommended dose for adults is 500 mg once daily for 3 days. For certain infections, a single dose of 1 g may be prescribed. Capsules should be taken with a full glass of water, with or without food.

Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F).
