Clopidogrel is an antiplatelet agent that inhibits platelet aggregation by selectively and irreversibly binding to the adenosine diphosphate (ADP) receptor on platelets, thus preventing the activation of the GPIIb/IIIa complex. This action reduces the risk of thrombotic events such as myocardial infarction and stroke.Indications:
- Prevention of atherothrombotic events in patients with myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, or established peripheral arterial disease
- Prevention of atherothrombotic and thromboembolic events in atrial fibrillation
- Acute coronary syndrome
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to clopidogrel or any component of the formulation
- Active pathological bleeding such as peptic ulcer or intracranial hemorrhage
- Severe hepatic impairment
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Common: bleeding, bruising, Uncommon: diarrhea, abdominal pain, indigestion, Rare: thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, aplastic anemia, Very rare: severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis
Dosing and Administration:
The recommended dose of Clopidogrel-AKOS is 75 mg once daily, with or without food. In acute coronary syndrome, an initial loading dose of 300 mg may be given, followed by 75 mg once daily.
