Plavix is an antiplatelet medication that inhibits platelet aggregation by selectively and irreversibly binding to the adenosine diphosphate (ADP) P2Y12 receptor on platelets, preventing ADP-mediated activation of the glycoprotein GPIIb/IIIa complex, thereby reducing the risk of thrombotic events.Indications:
- Prevention of atherothrombotic events in patients with myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, or established peripheral arterial disease
- Acute coronary syndrome
- Prevention of atherothrombotic and thromboembolic events in atrial fibrillation
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to clopidogrel or any component of the product
- Active pathological bleeding such as peptic ulcer or intracranial hemorrhage
- Severe liver impairment
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Common: bleeding, bruising, Uncommon: gastrointestinal disturbances, rash, Rare: severe neutropenia, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP)
Dosing and Administration:
The recommended dose of Plavix is 75 mg once daily, with or without food. In acute coronary syndrome, an initial loading dose of 300 mg may be given, followed by 75 mg once daily.
