Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to carbamazepine or any of the excipients
- Atrioventricular block
- History of bone marrow depression
- Porphyria
- Concomitant use of monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Dizziness, Drowsiness, Nausea, Vomiting, Ataxia, Blurred vision, Rash, Hyponatremia, Leukopenia, Hepatotoxicity
Dosing and Administration:
The recommended starting dose for adults is 200 mg twice daily, which may be increased gradually by 200 mg per day, as needed, until the desired response is achieved. The usual maintenance dose ranges from 800 mg to 1200 mg per day, divided into two or three doses. Dosage should be adjusted based on clinical response and tolerability.
