Pharmachologic effect:

Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant medication that affects chemicals and nerves in the body that are involved in the cause of seizures and some types of pain.

Indications:


  • Partial seizures in adults and children over 3 years of age
  • Neuropathic pain in adults

Contraindications:


  • Hypersensitivity to gabapentin or any of the excipients
  • Patients with severe renal impairment without appropriate dose adjustment

Side effects:


In order of decreasing probability: Dizziness, Somnolence, Peripheral edema, Fatigue, Ataxia, Nystagmus, Tremor, Blurred vision, Weight gain, Dry mouth

Dosing and Administration:


For adults with neuropathic pain, the starting dose is typically 300 mg on the first day, 300 mg twice on the second day, and 300 mg three times on the third day. The dose can be titrated up to a maximum of 3600 mg per day. For partial seizures, the initial dose is 300 mg three times a day, with a maintenance dose of 900-1800 mg per day in divided doses.
