- Epilepsy: as monotherapy in patients with newly diagnosed epilepsy or for conversion to monotherapy in patients with epilepsy.
- Adjunctive therapy for adults and children aged 2 years and above with partial onset seizures or primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures.
- Prevention of migraine headaches in adults.
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to topiramate or any of the excipients.
- Pregnancy and lactation unless the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus or infant.
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Very common: dizziness, fatigue, paresthesia, drowsiness., Common: weight loss, depression, memory impairment, confusion, nausea, diarrhea., Uncommon: kidney stones, metabolic acidosis, glaucoma., Rare: severe skin reactions, liver failure.
Dosing and Administration:
For epilepsy, the initial dose is typically 25 mg once daily, gradually increased by 25-50 mg per week to an effective dose. For adults, the usual maintenance dose is 100-200 mg twice daily. For migraine prevention, the recommended total daily dose is 100 mg per day, divided into two doses. Dose adjustments may be necessary based on clinical response and tolerability.
