Escitalopram is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that enhances serotonergic activity in the central nervous system by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin (5-HT) into the presynaptic neuron. This results in increased serotonin levels in the synaptic cleft, contributing to its antidepressant and anxiolytic effects.

Indications:

Major depressive disorder
Generalized anxiety disorder
Social anxiety disorder
Obsessive-compulsive disorder

Contraindications:

Hypersensitivity to escitalopram or any of the excipients
Concurrent use with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)
Known QT interval prolongation
Congenital long QT syndrome

Side effects:

In order of decreasing probability: Nausea, Insomnia, Fatigue, Dry mouth, Increased sweating, Dizziness, Somnolence, Diarrhea, Constipation, Decreased libido

Dosing and Administration:

The recommended starting dose of escitalopram is 10 mg once daily, which may be increased to a maximum of 20 mg per day depending on the patient's response and tolerability. It can be taken with or without food, preferably at the same time each day.
