Ondansetron is a selective serotonin 5-HT3 receptor antagonist. It works by blocking the action of serotonin, a natural substance that may cause nausea and vomiting.Indications:
- Prevention of nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
- Prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting.
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to ondansetron or any of the excipients.
- Concomitant use with apomorphine.
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Headache, Constipation, Diarrhea, Dizziness, Fatigue, Transient increases in liver enzymes
Dosing and Administration:
For the prevention of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, the recommended adult oral dose is 8 mg taken 1 to 2 hours before chemotherapy, followed by 8 mg every 12 hours for up to 5 days. For the prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting, a single dose of 16 mg is recommended 1 hour before anesthesia.
