Pharmachologic effect:

Sumatriptan is a selective serotonin receptor agonist that works by narrowing blood vessels around the brain and reducing substances in the body that can trigger headache pain, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and other migraine symptoms.

Indications:

• Acute treatment of migraine attacks with or without aura in adults.

Contraindications:

• Hypersensitivity to sumatriptan or any of the excipients
• History of myocardial infarction
• Ischemic heart disease or coronary vasospasm
• Uncontrolled hypertension
• Severe hepatic impairment
• Concurrent administration with, or within 2 weeks of discontinuing, monoamine oxidase inhibitors
• Concurrent use of ergotamine or its derivatives

Side effects:

In order of decreasing probability: Tingling sensation, Warm or cold sensation, Dizziness, Drowsiness, Fatigue, Nausea, Vomiting, Muscle pain, Flushing, Heaviness, pressure, or tightness in any part of the body

Dosing and Administration:

The recommended dose of sumatriptan for adults is a single 50 mg tablet taken orally with water. If the migraine persists or returns, a second dose may be taken at least 2 hours after the first dose. The maximum dose in 24 hours is 200 mg.

Storage:

Store at a temperature not exceeding 30°C (86°F).
