Sumatriptan

Pharmachologic effect:

Sumatriptan is a selective serotonin receptor agonist that works by narrowing blood vessels around the brain and reducing substances in the body that can trigger headache pain, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and other migraine symptoms.

Indications:

• Acute treatment of migraine attacks with or without aura in adults.

Contraindications:

• Hypersensitivity to sumatriptan or any of the excipients
• History of myocardial infarction
• Coronary artery disease or vasospasm
• Uncontrolled hypertension
• Severe hepatic impairment
• Concomitant use with ergotamine or its derivatives
• Concomitant use with another 5-HT1 receptor agonist

Side effects:

In order of decreasing probability: Very common: dizziness, drowsiness, Common: sensations of tingling, heat, heaviness, pressure or tightness, flushing, feeling of weakness, fatigue, Uncommon: transient increases in blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, Rare: visual disturbances, tremor, dystonia, Very rare: myocardial ischemia or infarction, cerebrovascular accident

Dosing and Administration:

The recommended dose is a single 50 mg tablet. Some patients may require 100 mg. If the migraine persists or returns after initial relief, a second dose may be taken at least 2 hours after the first dose. Do not exceed 200 mg in 24 hours.

Storage:

Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F).
