Levetiracetam is an antiepileptic drug that works by modulating synaptic neurotransmitter release through binding to the synaptic vesicle protein SV2A in the brain. This action helps to stabilize neuronal activity and prevent seizure episodes.Indications:
- Partial onset seizures in patients with epilepsy
- Myoclonic seizures in patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy
- Primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures in patients with idiopathic generalized epilepsy
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to levetiracetam or any of the excipients
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Very common: somnolence, asthenia, Common: dizziness, headache, irritability, insomnia, Uncommon: depression, anxiety, weight gain, Rare: severe skin reactions, liver function test abnormalities
Dosing and Administration:
The recommended starting dose is 500 mg twice daily. Based on the clinical response and tolerability, the dose can be increased by 500 mg twice daily every two weeks to a maximum recommended dose of 1500 mg twice daily. Levetiracetam can be taken with or without food.
Storage:
Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F).
