Fluconazole is an antifungal medication that inhibits the growth of various types of fungi by interfering with the formation of the fungal cell membrane.Indications:
- Candidiasis of the mouth, throat, and esophagus
- Vaginal candidiasis
- Cryptococcal meningitis
- Systemic candidiasis
- Prevention of fungal infections in patients undergoing bone marrow transplantation
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to fluconazole or other azole antifungal agents
- Concurrent use with drugs that are known to prolong the QT interval and are metabolized via CYP3A4
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Headache, Nausea, Abdominal pain, Diarrhea, Dizziness, Rash, Elevated liver enzymes, Anaphylaxis, QT prolongation
Dosing and Administration:
The recommended dosage of Fluconazole for adults varies depending on the type and severity of the infection. For vaginal candidiasis, a single dose of 150 mg is usually sufficient. For other infections, the dosage may range from 50 mg to 400 mg per day, taken orally. The duration of treatment depends on the clinical response and the type of infection.
