Pharmachologic effect:

Itraconazole is an antifungal medication that works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, a vital component of fungal cell membranes, thereby disrupting cell membrane formation and leading to fungal cell death.

Indications:


  • Treatment of systemic mycoses
  • Aspergillosis
  • Candidiasis
  • Cryptococcosis
  • Histoplasmosis
  • Sporotrichosis
  • Blastomycosis
  • Onychomycosis

Contraindications:


  • Hypersensitivity to itraconazole or any of the excipients
  • Pregnancy and lactation
  • Concurrent use with certain medications such as cisapride, pimozide, quinidine, and dofetilide
  • Patients with ventricular dysfunction or a history of congestive heart failure

Side effects:


In order of decreasing probability: Common: Nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, Uncommon: Headache, dizziness, fatigue, Rare: Hepatotoxicity, heart failure, severe allergic reactions

Dosing and Administration:


The recommended dose of Itraconazole capsules is 200 mg once daily. In severe infections, the dose may be increased to 200 mg twice daily. The capsules should be taken immediately after a full meal to ensure optimal absorption.

Storage:


Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F).
