Trimetazidine
Trimetazidine is a medication primarily used to improve heart health by enhancing energy metabolism in heart cells. It works by optimizing the energy processes, helping the heart function more efficiently, especially under stress or limited oxygen supply. Commonly prescribed for angina pectoris, it aids in reducing the frequency of angina attacks and improving exercise tolerance. Trimetazidine tablets are taken orally and are often part of a comprehensive plan to manage heart conditions. It is not a first-line treatment but serves as an adjunct therapy. This medication is especially beneficial for patients seeking to stabilize their heart function and improve their quality of life. Regular use as directed can help maintain optimal cardiac performance.Active substance:
TrimetazidinePharmachologic effect:
Trimetazidine is an anti-ischemic metabolic agent that improves myocardial glucose utilization through inhibition of fatty acid metabolism. It helps to maintain energy metabolism of heart and neurosensory tissues during episodes of ischemia, preventing a decrease in intracellular ATP levels.Indications:
- Symptomatic treatment of stable angina pectoris
- Adjunctive therapy for vertigo and tinnitus
- Adjunctive therapy for visual disturbances of vascular origin
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to trimetazidine or any of the excipients
- Parkinson's disease
- Parkinsonian symptoms
- Tremors
- Restless leg syndrome
- Severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance less than 30 ml/min)
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Common: Dizziness, headache, Uncommon: Abdominal pain, diarrhea, indigestion, nausea, vomiting, rash, pruritus, urticaria, Rare: Palpitations, extrasystoles, tachycardia, hypotension, orthostatic hypotension, flushing, Very rare: Extrapyramidal symptoms (tremor, rigidity, akinesia), usually reversible after treatment discontinuation
Dosing and Administration:
The recommended dose of trimetazidine is one tablet of 35 mg twice daily during meals. The dose should be adjusted in patients with moderate renal impairment and in elderly patients.
Storage:
Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F).
