Acetylsalicylic acid

Pharmachologic effect:

Acetylsalicylic acid exhibits anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and analgesic properties. It works by inhibiting the enzyme cyclooxygenase, which results in a decreased formation of prostaglandins and thromboxanes, thereby reducing inflammation, pain, and fever.

Indications:

• Pain relief for mild to moderate pain
• Fever reduction
• Inflammatory conditions
• Prevention of thromboembolic disorders

Contraindications:

• Hypersensitivity to acetylsalicylic acid or other NSAIDs
• History of asthma induced by salicylates or other NSAIDs
• Active peptic ulcer disease
• Hemorrhagic diathesis
• Severe renal or hepatic impairment
• Children and teenagers with viral infections due to risk of Reye's syndrome

Side effects:

In order of decreasing probability: Common: Gastrointestinal discomfort, nausea, heartburn, Uncommon: Allergic reactions, rash, urticaria, Rare: Gastrointestinal bleeding, peptic ulcers, tinnitus, Very rare: Severe hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis

Dosing and Administration:

For adults, the typical dose is 300-600 mg every 4-6 hours as needed, not to exceed 4 grams per day. It should be taken with a full glass of water and preferably with food to minimize gastrointestinal discomfort.

Storage:

Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F).
