Acyclovir is an antiviral medication that works by inhibiting the replication of viral DNA, thus preventing the virus from multiplying and spreading in the body. It is primarily effective against herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2, varicella-zoster virus, and to a lesser extent, Epstein-Barr virus and cytomegalovirus.Indications:
- Treatment of herpes simplex virus infections of the skin and mucous membranes, including initial and recurrent genital herpes.
- Suppression of recurrent herpes simplex infections in immunocompetent patients.
- Prophylaxis of herpes simplex infections in immunocompromised patients.
- Treatment of varicella (chickenpox) and herpes zoster (shingles).
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to acyclovir or any of the excipients in the formulation.
- Severe renal impairment without appropriate dose adjustment.
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Nausea, Diarrhea, Headache, Dizziness, Fatigue, Abdominal pain, Rash, Itching, Photosensitivity, Confusion, Hallucinations, Tremors
Dosing and Administration:
For the treatment of herpes simplex infections, the recommended dose is 200 mg taken five times a day at approximately four-hour intervals, omitting the night dose, for five days. For the treatment of varicella and herpes zoster, the recommended dose is 800 mg taken five times a day at approximately four-hour intervals, omitting the night dose, for seven to ten days. Dosage may need adjustment in patients with renal impairment.
