Rimantadine is an antiviral medication that inhibits the replication of influenza A virus by interfering with the viral M2 protein, which is essential for the viral uncoating process within the host cell.Indications:
- Prophylaxis and treatment of influenza A in adults and children.
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to rimantadine or any component of the formulation
- Severe liver dysfunction
- Severe renal impairment
- Acute or chronic untreated angle-closure glaucoma
- Pregnancy and lactation
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Nausea, Dizziness, Insomnia, Nervousness, Fatigue, Headache, Dry mouth, Loss of appetite
Dosing and Administration:
For adults, the recommended dosage is 100 mg twice daily. For children aged 7 to 14 years, the dosage is 50 mg twice daily. Treatment should begin as soon as possible after the onset of influenza symptoms and continue for approximately 5 to 7 days.
