Tenofovir is an antiviral medication primarily used for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults and children. It works by inhibiting the reverse transcriptase enzyme, crucial for viral replication in the body. Available in tablet form, it is commonly used in combination with other antiretrovirals for optimal effectiveness. Tenofovir is also indicated for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B in adults. The medication is known for its potent efficacy in reducing viral load and improving immune system function. Regular monitoring of renal function is recommended during treatment. It is usually taken once daily, with or without food.

Pharmachologic effect:

Tenofovir is an antiretroviral medication used to treat and prevent HIV/AIDS and to treat chronic hepatitis B. It works by inhibiting the reverse transcriptase enzyme, which is essential for viral replication.

Indications:


  • Treatment of HIV-1 infection in combination with other antiretroviral agents
  • Treatment of chronic hepatitis B in adults

Contraindications:


  • Hypersensitivity to tenofovir or any component of the formulation
  • Severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance <30 mL/min)

Side effects:


In order of decreasing probability: Nausea, Diarrhea, Dizziness, Headache, Fatigue, Rash, Depression, Insomnia, Vomiting, Renal impairment, Lactic acidosis, Hepatomegaly with steatosis

Dosing and Administration:


The recommended dose for adults is one tablet (300 mg) taken orally once daily with or without food. Dosage adjustments may be necessary for patients with renal impairment.

Storage:


Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F).
