- Treatment of herpes zoster (shingles)
- Treatment of genital herpes in immunocompetent adults
- Suppression of recurrent genital herpes
- Reduction of transmission of genital herpes
- Treatment of cold sores (herpes labialis)
- Treatment of chickenpox in immunocompetent pediatric patients
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to valacyclovir, acyclovir, or any component of the formulation
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Headache, Nausea, Abdominal pain, Dizziness, Fatigue, Rash, Vomiting, Diarrhea, Photosensitivity
Dosing and Administration:
For the treatment of herpes zoster, the recommended dosage is 1000 mg three times daily for 7 days. For the treatment of genital herpes, the recommended dosage is 500 mg twice daily for 3 days. For suppression of recurrent genital herpes, the recommended dosage is 500 mg to 1000 mg once daily. For reduction of transmission of genital herpes, the recommended dosage is 500 mg once daily. For the treatment of cold sores, the recommended dosage is 2000 mg twice daily for 1 day. For the treatment of chickenpox in pediatric patients, the dosage is based on body weight.
