Pharmachologic effect:

Valtrex is an antiviral medication that works by inhibiting the replication of viral DNA, thereby reducing the spread and severity of viral infections.

Indications:


  • Treatment of herpes zoster (shingles)
  • Treatment of genital herpes
  • Treatment of cold sores (herpes labialis)
  • Prevention of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection following organ transplantation
  • Suppression of recurrent genital herpes

Contraindications:


  • Hypersensitivity to valacyclovir or acyclovir
  • Severe renal impairment
  • Dehydration

Side effects:


In order of decreasing probability: Headache, Nausea, Abdominal pain, Dizziness, Fatigue, Rash, Vomiting, Diarrhea, Increased liver enzymes, Renal impairment

Dosing and Administration:


For the treatment of herpes zoster, the recommended dose is 1000 mg three times daily for 7 days. For the treatment of genital herpes, the recommended dose is 500 mg twice daily for 3 to 5 days. For the prevention of CMV infection, the recommended dose is 2000 mg four times daily. Dosage adjustments may be necessary for patients with renal impairment.
