- Treatment of herpes simplex virus infections of the skin and mucous membranes, including initial and recurrent genital herpes.
- Suppression of recurrent herpes simplex infections in immunocompetent patients.
- Prophylaxis of herpes simplex infections in immunocompromised patients.
- Treatment of varicella (chickenpox) and herpes zoster (shingles).
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to acyclovir or any of the excipients in the formulation.

In order of decreasing probability: Nausea, Diarrhea, Headache, Dizziness, Fatigue, Rash, Abdominal pain
Dosing and Administration:
For the treatment of herpes simplex infections, the recommended dose is 200 mg taken five times a day for 5 days. For the suppression of recurrent herpes simplex infections, the recommended dose is 400 mg taken twice daily. For the treatment of varicella and herpes zoster, the recommended dose is 800 mg taken five times a day for 7 to 10 days. Dosage may need adjustment in patients with renal impairment.
