Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist that blocks substances called leukotrienes. Leukotrienes cause narrowing and swelling of airways in the lungs and also cause allergy symptoms. By blocking leukotrienes, montelukast improves asthma symptoms, helps control asthma, and decreases the number of asthma attacks.Indications:
- Prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma in adults and pediatric patients 12 months of age and older
- Prevention of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction in patients 6 years of age and older
- Relief of symptoms of allergic rhinitis (seasonal allergic rhinitis in patients 2 years of age and older, and perennial allergic rhinitis in patients 6 months of age and older)
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to montelukast or any of its components
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Headache, Abdominal pain, Cough, Dizziness, Fatigue, Fever, Rash, Dyspepsia, Elevated liver enzymes, Mood changes
Dosing and Administration:
For adults and adolescents 15 years of age and older: 10 mg tablet once daily in the evening. For pediatric patients 6 to 14 years of age: 5 mg chewable tablet once daily in the evening. For pediatric patients 2 to 5 years of age: 4 mg chewable tablet or 4 mg oral granules once daily in the evening. For pediatric patients 12 to 23 months of age: 4 mg oral granules once daily in the evening.
Storage:
Store at 15-30°C (59-86°F).
