Avelox is an antibacterial agent belonging to the fluoroquinolone class. It works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes critical for DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination, leading to the death of susceptible bacteria.Indications:
- Acute bacterial sinusitis
- Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis
- Community-acquired pneumonia
- Uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections
- Complicated intra-abdominal infections
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to moxifloxacin or other quinolones
- Pregnancy and lactation
- Patients under 18 years of age
- History of tendon disorders related to quinolone use
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Nausea, Diarrhea, Dizziness, Headache, QT interval prolongation, Tendonitis and tendon rupture, Allergic reactions
Dosing and Administration:
The recommended dose for adults is 400 mg once daily. The duration of treatment depends on the type and severity of the infection. For acute bacterial sinusitis, the usual duration is 7 to 14 days. For community-acquired pneumonia, the duration is typically 7 to 14 days. Avelox can be taken with or without food.
