Pharmachologic effect:

Bisacodyl is a stimulant laxative that works by increasing the movement of the intestines, helping the stool to come out.

Indications:


  • Constipation
  • Preparation for diagnostic procedures
  • Pre- and postoperative treatment where defecation with a soft stool is desired

Contraindications:


  • Hypersensitivity to bisacodyl
  • Intestinal obstruction
  • Acute abdominal conditions including appendicitis
  • Severe abdominal pain associated with nausea and vomiting
  • Severe dehydration
  • Children under 6 years of age

Side effects:


In order of decreasing probability: Abdominal cramps, Diarrhea, Nausea, Vomiting, Dizziness, Electrolyte imbalance, Allergic reactions

Dosing and Administration:


Adults and children over 12 years: 5-15 mg (1-3 tablets) once daily before bedtime. Children 6-12 years: 5 mg (1 tablet) once daily before bedtime. The tablets should be swallowed whole with water.

Storage:


Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F).
