Levetiracetam is an antiepileptic drug that works by inhibiting burst firing in the brain, thereby reducing the frequency of seizures.Indications:
- Partial onset seizures in patients aged 4 years and older
- Myoclonic seizures in patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy
- Primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures in patients with idiopathic generalized epilepsy
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to levetiracetam or any of the excipients
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Very common: Somnolence, asthenia, Common: Dizziness, headache, insomnia, irritability, Uncommon: Depression, anxiety, weight gain, Rare: Severe skin reactions, liver function test abnormalities
Dosing and Administration:
The recommended starting dose for adults and adolescents aged 16 years and older is 500 mg twice daily. Depending on the clinical response and tolerability, the dose can be increased to a maximum of 1500 mg twice daily. Dose adjustments may be necessary for patients with renal impairment.
