Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist that blocks the vasoconstrictor and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II by selectively blocking the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptor found in many tissues, such as vascular smooth muscle and the adrenal gland.Indications:
- Hypertension
- Reduction of the risk of stroke in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy
- Treatment of diabetic nephropathy in patients with type 2 diabetes and hypertension
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to losartan or any component of the formulation
- Pregnancy
- Severe hepatic impairment
- Concomitant use with aliskiren in patients with diabetes
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Dizziness, Hypotension, Hyperkalemia, Fatigue, Renal impairment, Cough, Angioedema, Back pain, Nasal congestion
Dosing and Administration:
The usual starting dose is 50 mg once daily. The dosage may be increased to 100 mg once daily as needed. For patients with possible intravascular volume depletion (e.g., those treated with diuretics), a starting dose of 25 mg once daily should be considered.
Storage:
Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F).
