Contraindications:
- Severe sinus-node dysfunction
- Second- or third-degree atrioventricular block
- Bradycardia leading to syncope
- Hypersensitivity to iodine or amiodarone
- Pregnancy and lactation
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Nausea, Vomiting, Fatigue, Tremor, Pulmonary toxicity, Thyroid dysfunction, Liver function abnormalities, Photosensitivity, Corneal microdeposits
Dosing and Administration:
The initial dose for adults is usually 800-1600 mg per day for 1-3 weeks until adequate control of the arrhythmia is achieved. The maintenance dose is typically 200-400 mg per day. The tablets should be taken with meals to reduce gastrointestinal side effects.
