Pentoxifylline
Pentoxifylline is a medication designed to improve blood flow by reducing the viscosity of blood, making it less sticky. This helps to enhance circulation, particularly in individuals with peripheral artery disease or intermittent claudication. By increasing the flexibility of red blood cells, it aids in better oxygen delivery to tissues and organs. Typically administered in tablet form, Pentoxifylline is commonly used to alleviate symptoms such as leg pain caused by poor circulation. It is also beneficial in treating other conditions associated with compromised blood flow. Regular use of Pentoxifylline can lead to improved exercise tolerance and reduced muscle pain during physical activity.Active substance:
PentoxifyllinePharmachologic effect:
Pentoxifylline is a xanthine derivative that improves blood flow by decreasing its viscosity, enhancing microcirculation, and increasing tissue oxygenation. It acts as a phosphodiesterase inhibitor, leading to increased cAMP levels and vasodilation.Indications:
- Peripheral arterial disease
- Intermittent claudication
- Chronic occlusive arterial disease
- Cerebrovascular insufficiency
- Diabetic angiopathy
- Trophic disorders (e.g., leg ulcers, gangrene)
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to pentoxifylline or other xanthines
- Recent cerebral or retinal hemorrhage
- Acute myocardial infarction
- Severe coronary artery disease
- Severe arrhythmias
- Hemorrhagic diathesis
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Nausea, Vomiting, Dizziness, Headache, Flushing, Hypotension, Palpitations, Abdominal discomfort, Diarrhea, Allergic reactions (e.g., rash, pruritus)
Dosing and Administration:
The recommended dose is 400 mg taken orally three times a day with meals. The dose may be adjusted based on patient response and tolerability. It is important to swallow the tablets whole with a sufficient amount of water.
Storage:
Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F).
