Pharmachologic effect:

Propafenone is an antiarrhythmic medication that works by stabilizing the cardiac membrane and reducing abnormal electrical activity in the heart, thereby helping to restore normal heart rhythm.

Indications:


  • Treatment of life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias
  • Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation/flutter
  • Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia

Contraindications:


  • Hypersensitivity to propafenone or any of the excipients
  • Significant structural heart disease
  • Bradycardia
  • Severe hypotension
  • Severe obstructive pulmonary disease
  • Cardiogenic shock
  • Uncontrolled heart failure
  • Myasthenia gravis

Side effects:


In order of decreasing probability: Dizziness, Fatigue, Nausea, Vomiting, Constipation, Metallic taste, Headache, Palpitations, Bradycardia, Hypotension, Dyspnea, Visual disturbances

Dosing and Administration:


The recommended initial dose is 150 mg taken orally every 8 hours. The dose may be increased to 300 mg every 8 hours if necessary, based on clinical response and tolerance. Dosage adjustments may be required for patients with hepatic or renal impairment.

Storage:


Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F).
