Clopidogrel is an antiplatelet agent that inhibits blood clots by irreversibly binding to the P2Y12 receptor on platelets, thus preventing ADP-mediated activation of the glycoprotein GPIIb/IIIa complex. This action reduces the risk of thrombotic events such as heart attacks and strokes.Indications:
- Prevention of atherothrombotic events in patients with myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, or established peripheral arterial disease.
- Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) including unstable angina and non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) in combination with aspirin.
- ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) in combination with aspirin in medically treated patients eligible for thrombolytic therapy.
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to clopidogrel or any component of the product.
- Active pathological bleeding such as peptic ulcer or intracranial hemorrhage.
- Severe hepatic impairment.
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Common: Bleeding, bruising., Uncommon: Diarrhea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia., Rare: Thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, aplastic anemia., Very rare: Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis.
Dosing and Administration:
The recommended dose of clopidogrel is 75 mg once daily, with or without food. In acute coronary syndrome, an initial loading dose of 300 mg may be given, followed by 75 mg once daily in combination with aspirin.
