Rosuvastatin
Rosuvastatin is a statin medication used to lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart disease. It works by inhibiting an enzyme involved in the production of cholesterol in the liver, leading to decreased levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, commonly known as 'bad' cholesterol. Rosuvastatin is a lipid-lowering agent that works by inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which plays a central role in the production of cholesterol in the liver. This leads to a decrease in total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and triglycerides, while increasing high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol.Indications:
- Primary hypercholesterolemia
- Mixed dyslipidemia
- Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia
- Prevention of cardiovascular events in patients at high risk
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to rosuvastatin or any of the excipients
- Active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevations of serum transaminases
- Severe renal impairment
- Pregnancy and lactation
- Concomitant use with cyclosporine
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Headache, Dizziness, Constipation, Nausea, Abdominal pain, Myalgia, Asthenia, Increased liver enzymes, Rhabdomyolysis
Dosing and Administration:
The usual starting dose is 5 to 10 mg once daily. Adjustments can be made at intervals of 4 weeks or more, with a maximum dose of 40 mg once daily. The dose should be individualized according to patient response and therapeutic goals.
Storage:
Store at a temperature not exceeding 30°C (86°F).
