Carvedilol is a non-selective beta-blocker with alpha-1 blocking activity. It reduces cardiac output, decreases peripheral vascular resistance, and lowers blood pressure. It also has antioxidant properties.Indications:
- Hypertension
- Chronic heart failure
- Left ventricular dysfunction following myocardial infarction
Contraindications:
- Asthma
- Severe bradycardia
- Second or third-degree AV block
- Severe hepatic impairment
- Cardiogenic shock
- Hypersensitivity to carvedilol or any component of the formulation
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Dizziness, Fatigue, Hypotension, Diarrhea, Bradycardia, Weight gain, Hyperglycemia, Nausea
Dosing and Administration:
The recommended starting dose for hypertension is 6.25 mg twice daily, which may be increased after 7-14 days to 12.5 mg twice daily. For heart failure, start with 3.125 mg twice daily, increasing gradually to a maximum of 25 mg twice daily. Dosage should be adjusted based on clinical response and tolerance.
