Alendronate
Alendronate, known chemically as Alendronic acid, is a medication primarily used to treat and prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and men. It works by inhibiting the activity of osteoclasts, cells responsible for bone resorption, thereby strengthening bones and reducing the risk of fractures. Alendronate tablets are also prescribed for Paget's disease of bone, helping to normalize bone remodeling. The medication is typically taken once weekly on an empty stomach with a full glass of water, maintaining an upright position for at least 30 minutes afterward. Contraindications:
- Abnormalities of the esophagus which delay esophageal emptying
- Inability to stand or sit upright for at least 30 minutes
- Hypocalcemia
- Hypersensitivity to alendronate or any component of the formulation
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Common: Abdominal pain, dyspepsia, acid regurgitation, nausea, musculoskeletal pain, Uncommon: Esophageal ulcer, esophagitis, gastritis, gastric ulcer, Rare: Osteonecrosis of the jaw, atypical femoral fractures, severe skin reactions
Dosing and Administration:
The recommended dosage for the treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and in men is 10 mg once daily or 70 mg once weekly. The tablet should be taken with a full glass of water at least 30 minutes before the first food, beverage, or medication of the day. Patients should remain upright for at least 30 minutes after taking the medication.
Storage:
Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F).
