Febuxostat is a selective inhibitor of xanthine oxidase, an enzyme responsible for the conversion of hypoxanthine to xanthine and xanthine to uric acid. By inhibiting xanthine oxidase, febuxostat reduces the production of uric acid, thereby lowering serum uric acid levels.Indications:
- Chronic hyperuricemia in conditions where urate deposition has already occurred (including a history, or presence, of tophus and/or gouty arthritis).
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to febuxostat or any of the excipients.
- Severe renal impairment.
- Severe hepatic impairment.
- Patients with ischemic heart disease or congestive heart failure.

In order of decreasing probability: Nausea, Rash, Liver function abnormalities, Diarrhea, Headache, Dizziness, Fatigue, Joint pain, Increased liver enzymes, Edema
Dosing and Administration:
The recommended oral dose of febuxostat is 40 mg or 80 mg once daily. The starting dose is 40 mg once daily. If serum uric acid is not less than 6 mg/dL after 2 weeks, the dose may be increased to 80 mg once daily. Febuxostat can be taken with or without food.
Storage:
Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F).
