Formetin Long is an oral antihyperglycemic drug used to control blood sugar levels. It works by decreasing hepatic glucose production, decreasing intestinal absorption of glucose, and improving insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization.Indications:
- Type 2 diabetes mellitus, particularly in overweight patients, when dietary management and exercise alone do not result in adequate glycemic control.
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to metformin or any of the excipients
- Acute or chronic metabolic acidosis, including diabetic ketoacidosis, with or without coma
- Severe renal impairment
- Acute conditions with the potential to alter renal function such as dehydration, severe infection, shock
- Acute or chronic disease which may cause tissue hypoxia such as cardiac or respiratory failure, recent myocardial infarction, shock
- Hepatic insufficiency
- Excessive alcohol intake, acute or chronic alcoholism
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Very common: Gastrointestinal disorders such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite, Common: Taste disturbance, Uncommon: Skin reactions such as erythema, pruritus, urticaria, Rare: Lactic acidosis, Vitamin B12 deficiency, Very rare: Hepatitis, liver function test abnormalities
Dosing and Administration:
The recommended starting dose is 500 mg once daily with the evening meal. Dosage increases should be made in increments of 500 mg every 10 to 15 days, up to a maximum of 2000 mg once daily with the evening meal. If glycemic control is not achieved on 2000 mg once daily, consider a regimen of 1000 mg twice daily with meals.
