Pharmachologic effect:

Galvus is an oral antidiabetic agent that belongs to the class of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors. It works by increasing the levels of incretin hormones, which help to regulate blood glucose levels by increasing insulin release and decreasing glucagon secretion.

Indications:


  • Type 2 diabetes mellitus as monotherapy
  • Type 2 diabetes mellitus in combination with other antidiabetic agents when diet, exercise, and a single antidiabetic agent do not result in adequate glycemic control

Contraindications:


  • Hypersensitivity to vildagliptin or any of the excipients
  • Type 1 diabetes mellitus
  • Diabetic ketoacidosis
  • Severe renal impairment
  • Moderate to severe hepatic impairment

Side effects:


In order of decreasing probability: Common: Headache, dizziness, nausea, Uncommon: Fatigue, constipation, peripheral edema, Rare: Hepatic dysfunction, hepatitis, Very rare: Angioedema, pancreatitis

Dosing and Administration:


The recommended dose of Galvus is 50 mg once or twice daily. When used in combination with a sulfonylurea, the recommended dose is 50 mg once daily. The maximum daily dose is 100 mg. Galvus can be taken with or without food.

Storage:


Store at a temperature not exceeding 30°C (86°F).
