Metformin is an oral antihyperglycemic drug used to manage type 2 diabetes. It works by decreasing hepatic glucose production, decreasing intestinal absorption of glucose, and improving insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization.Indications:
- Type 2 diabetes mellitus, particularly in overweight patients when dietary management and exercise alone do not result in adequate glycemic control.
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to metformin or any of the excipients
- Severe renal impairment
- Acute or chronic metabolic acidosis, including diabetic ketoacidosis
- Severe hepatic insufficiency
- Acute conditions with the potential to alter renal function

Dosing and Administration:
The usual starting dose is 500 mg or 850 mg once daily, given with meals. Dosage increases should be made in increments of 500 mg weekly or 850 mg every two weeks, up to a maximum of 2000 mg per day, divided into 2-3 doses.
