Pharmachologic effect:

Diltiazem is a calcium channel blocker that works by relaxing the muscles of your heart and blood vessels. It is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and angina (chest pain). By lowering blood pressure, it helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems.

Indications:


  • Hypertension
  • Chronic stable angina
  • Angina due to coronary artery spasm

Contraindications:


  • Severe hypotension
  • Recent myocardial infarction with pulmonary congestion
  • Second- or third-degree AV block (except in patients with a functioning artificial pacemaker)
  • Sick sinus syndrome (except in patients with a functioning artificial pacemaker)
  • Hypersensitivity to diltiazem or any of the excipients

Side effects:


In order of decreasing probability: Headache, Dizziness, Bradycardia, Peripheral edema, Nausea, Constipation, Rash

Dosing and Administration:


The usual starting dose is 30 mg to 60 mg taken orally three to four times a day. Dosage may be adjusted according to the patient's response and needs, up to a maximum of 360 mg per day. Tablets should be taken before meals and at bedtime.

Storage:


Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F).
