Acetazolamide
Acetazolamide is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor primarily used to manage glaucoma. By decreasing the production of aqueous humor in the eye, it effectively reduces elevated intraocular pressure, helping to prevent optic nerve damage. Acetazolamide is available in tablet form, allowing for convenient oral administration. It is also utilized in the treatment of certain types of epilepsy and altitude sickness. The medication provides a reliable option for maintaining eye health and preventing vision loss. Regular monitoring of eye pressure is recommended during treatment. Acetazolamide should be stored at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.Active substance:
AcetazolamidePharmachologic effect:
Acetazolamide is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor that reduces the production of aqueous humor in the eye and decreases the reabsorption of bicarbonate in the kidneys, leading to diuresis and reduction of intraocular pressure.Indications:
- Glaucoma
- Edema due to congestive heart failure
- Drug-induced edema
- Epilepsy
- Acute mountain sickness
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to acetazolamide or sulfonamides
- Severe renal dysfunction
- Severe hepatic dysfunction
- Adrenal gland failure
- Hyponatremia
- Hypokalemia
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Common: Paresthesia, fatigue, dizziness, Uncommon: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, Rare: Stevens-Johnson syndrome, aplastic anemia, metabolic acidosis
Dosing and Administration:
The usual adult dosage for glaucoma is 250 mg to 1 g per day in divided doses. For edema, the typical dose is 250 mg to 375 mg once daily. For epilepsy, 250 mg to 1 g per day in divided doses. For acute mountain sickness, 500 mg to 1 g per day in divided doses. Dosage should be adjusted based on patient response and tolerance.
Storage:
Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F).
