Rivastigmine is a cholinesterase inhibitor that works by restoring the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain, which helps to improve cognitive function in patients with Alzheimer's disease or Parkinson's disease dementia.Indications:
- Mild to moderate dementia of the Alzheimer's type
- Mild to moderate dementia associated with Parkinson's disease
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to rivastigmine or any component of the formulation
- History of application site reactions with rivastigmine patch suggestive of allergic contact dermatitis
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Nausea, Vomiting, Diarrhea, Loss of appetite, Weight loss, Dizziness, Headache, Tremor, Fatigue, Insomnia
Dosing and Administration:
The recommended starting dose is 1.5 mg twice a day. If this dose is well tolerated, it can be increased to 3 mg twice a day after a minimum of two weeks. Further increases to 4.5 mg and then 6 mg twice a day should also be based on good tolerability of the current dose and may be considered after a minimum of two weeks at each dose level.
