Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant medication that affects chemicals and nerves in the body that are involved in the cause of seizures and some types of pain.Indications:
- Partial seizures in adults and children aged 3 years and older
- Postherpetic neuralgia in adults
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to gabapentin or any of the excipients
- Severe renal impairment
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Dizziness, Somnolence, Peripheral edema, Ataxia, Fatigue, Nausea and vomiting, Viral infection, Fever, Nystagmus
Dosing and Administration:
For adults with postherpetic neuralgia, the initial dose is 300 mg on Day 1, 600 mg on Day 2 (300 mg twice a day), and 900 mg on Day 3 (300 mg three times a day). The dose can be titrated up to 1800 mg/day (600 mg three times a day) based on efficacy and tolerability. For epilepsy, the starting dose is 300 mg three times a day, with a maintenance dose of 900-1800 mg/day in divided doses.
