Dexilant is a proton pump inhibitor that decreases the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It works by blocking the proton pump in the stomach lining, thereby reducing gastric acid secretion.Indications:
- Treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Healing of erosive esophagitis
- Maintenance of healed erosive esophagitis and relief of heartburn
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to dexlansoprazole or any component of the formulation
- Concomitant use with rilpivirine-containing products
Side effects:
In order of decreasing probability: Common: Diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, Uncommon: Vomiting, flatulence, upper respiratory tract infection, Rare: Hypomagnesemia, Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, Very Rare: Severe skin reactions, interstitial nephritis
Dosing and Administration:
For the treatment of GERD, the recommended dose is 30 mg once daily for 4 weeks. For healing of erosive esophagitis, the recommended dose is 60 mg once daily for up to 8 weeks. For maintenance of healed erosive esophagitis, the recommended dose is 30 mg once daily. Capsules should be swallowed whole and can be taken with or without food.
