Pharmachologic effect:

Pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that decreases the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It works by blocking the enzyme in the wall of the stomach that produces acid, thereby reducing gastric acidity.

Indications:


  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Erosive esophagitis
  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
  • Peptic ulcer disease
  • Helicobacter pylori eradication (in combination with antibiotics)

Contraindications:


  • Hypersensitivity to pantoprazole or any component of the formulation
  • Severe liver impairment
  • Coadministration with atazanavir or nelfinavir

Side effects:


In order of decreasing probability: Headache, Diarrhea, Nausea, Abdominal pain, Dizziness, Flatulence, Arthralgia, Rash

Dosing and Administration:


The recommended dose for adults is 40 mg once daily, taken orally. For the treatment of erosive esophagitis, the usual duration is 8 weeks. For maintenance therapy, a dose of 20 mg once daily may be used. Dosage adjustments may be necessary for specific conditions or in patients with liver impairment.
