Pharmachologic effect:

Levofloxacin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that belongs to the fluoroquinolone class. It works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes critical for DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination, leading to the death of susceptible bacteria.

Indications:


  • Community-acquired pneumonia
  • Chronic bronchitis exacerbations
  • Acute bacterial sinusitis
  • Complicated urinary tract infections
  • Uncomplicated urinary tract infections
  • Acute pyelonephritis
  • Skin and soft tissue infections

Contraindications:


  • Hypersensitivity to levofloxacin or other quinolones
  • Epilepsy
  • History of tendon disorders related to fluoroquinolone administration
  • Pregnancy and lactation
  • Children and adolescents under 18 years of age

Side effects:


In order of decreasing probability: Nausea, Diarrhea, Headache, Dizziness, Insomnia, Constipation, Rash, Abdominal pain, Vomiting, Tendinitis

Dosing and Administration:


The usual dose of Levofloxacin is 500 mg once or twice daily, depending on the severity and type of infection. The duration of treatment typically ranges from 7 to 14 days. Tablets should be swallowed whole with sufficient liquid and can be taken with or without food.

Storage:


Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F).
