Pharmachologic effect:

Glimepiride is a sulfonylurea antidiabetic medication that stimulates the release of insulin from pancreatic beta cells. It also increases the sensitivity of peripheral tissues to insulin, thereby improving glucose uptake and utilization.

Indications:


  • Type 2 diabetes mellitus when diet, exercise, and weight reduction alone are not adequate.

Contraindications:


  • Hypersensitivity to glimepiride or any of the excipients
  • Type 1 diabetes mellitus
  • Diabetic ketoacidosis
  • Severe renal or hepatic impairment
  • Pregnancy and lactation

Side effects:


In order of decreasing probability: Hypoglycemia, Dizziness, Headache, Nausea, Allergic skin reactions, Visual disturbances

Dosing and Administration:


The usual starting dose is 1 mg once daily, taken with breakfast or the first main meal. The dose may be adjusted based on blood glucose response, with a typical maintenance dose ranging from 1 to 4 mg daily. The maximum recommended dose is 8 mg per day.

Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F).
